SPINACH & SPANISH REACTION

Initial Post

My initial reaction was how adorable are these kids! Then, I thought to myself, how on earth did this topic come about between these two children?

I believe that sociologists watch and study the interactions between these kids, which represent people in our society. Everyone lives in the same society, yet influenced by different sources. They may look at the same event or word, but understand or react differently. Sociologists observe and study these interactions between people in order to better understand why someone may think the way they do or why someone acts the way they do.

Reflection

This was one of the first assignments in the course. Looking back, it ultimately showed me how to view, interpret, accesses and analyze the world from a sociologist’s point of view.  I did my best in order to try to interpret the video, however, looking back at the assignment now, I did not analyze the content very well. Nevertheless, my knowledge base of Sociology has improved much since that assignment. Spinach and Spanish required me to utilize my analytical skills and in doing so, it helped develop my critical thinking abilities as well. I did not have a strong knowledge base about Sociology. I found it challenging to come up with ideas to connect the short video with Sociology. However, participating in the discussion with my classmates was very helpful. It helped me better understand the video even though everyone had their own different viewpoints. It was great to be able to read different perspectives. My goal for the future is to be able to think on a deeper level, understand underlying factors and have an open standpoint in order to make sense of things. I do not want to over-generalize, which is a problem that may lead to unfair judgments. I want to be able to look at the world through more than one perspective (such as Marxian, feminists or Weber’s) in order to understand different levels of society.
